How To Focus On Homework When Depressed: Solid Advice

Throughout the course of your academic career you will find that on occasion he become depressed. Depression is a serious concern that many students have to battle. But simply because you were depressed does not mean that you should let it affect your grades. One of the ways that you can overcome this and make sure your grades to not suffer as a result is to stay focused on your homework. Even if you are struggling with your emotions you can still stay focused on your tasks and achieve the academic success that you want.

How is this done?

  • The first thing you can do is spend a few minutes before you start on any task meditating. It is best that you work on a regular basis for a set amount of time. During this time you may find that your emotions cause you to mentally wander from the task at hand. If you start your work sessions by trying a bit of deep meditation you may find that your focus improves.

  • Meditation does not work for you another option is to use a free writing session. This is a good way to start your study sessions because it allows you to write down any the thoughts that are occupying your mind, particularly any of emotional ideas. Writing down these ideas gets them off of your conscious mind and allows you to focus better on the task at hand. This is a good exercise to do not just when brainstorming but when having difficulty focusing.

  • One trick that you can do when struggling is to play calm and relaxing music in the background. Classical music and instrumental music work best. It is important to avoid music that has lyrics because these will distract your mind from the task at hand. You might find that as you are trying to write out a chapter review question you end up writing the lyrics to the song that is playing. You can avoid this by simply picking music which does not have any lyrics. Your brain and your emotional state can be altered by the music that you pick. If you play up lifting classical music with a moderate tempo you may find that it improves your mood and helps you to focus on all of your assignments. You can play around with various musicians, instrumental forms, or classical artists until you find something that helps to relax you.

  • While you are listening to music try and have a cup of peppermint tea or light peppermint infused incense. The peppermint calm you down and help you to focus on your tasks.
